8:00 am - 9:00 am: Check In

MORNING SEMINARS: REFLECTIONS - LEARNING FROM OUR PAST

9:00 am - 10:15 am: A Seat At The Table

Who has the wine and Riesling world excluded from its narrative and history, from vineyards to production to sales and restaurants? What have the consequences been for those people and communities, and what did the wine world lose for not having those voices? Join Etinosa Emokpae, Sarita Cheaves and Glynis Hill of Swirl Suite, Carlos Aguilera of Stick and Stone Farm, and Bill Jensen for this foundational conversation.

10:30 am - 11:45 am: The Wines We've Lost

Wine styles can be lost due to cultural changes in taste, climate change making a style impossible in a region that long called it home, or from loss of the people who made that wine. What do these wines communicate about the people and culture they hail from, and what does it mean when they are lost or fade away?  Join Kelli White for this intriguing discussion and tasting of Rieslings that are increasingly hard to find.

12:00 pm: A Luncheon of "Rule-Breaking Austrian Rieslings" at Geneva On The Lake

Hosted on the beautiful grounds of Geneva On The Lake, this lunch will showcase Austrian Rieslings that defy expectations for the grape.  Hosted by the inimitable David Schildknecht and sponsored by Austrian Wine, get ready for a lunch that will expand your taste-buds and horizons.

AFTERNOON SEMINARS: WHAT IS NORMAL - CONSIDERING OUR PRESENT

2:00 pm - 3:15 pm: Riesling, Wet and Dry, The Present Climate

Is Riesling a cool climate grape that is doomed in a warming world? Or is it’s supposed cool climate ‘home’ long since warmed beyond that climate type and we are just catching up? Join esteemed Riesling critic Stuart Pigott and a panel of Riesling Winemakers from cool and hot climates as they discuss what is cool, what isn’t cool anymore, and how these changes matter for Riesling.

3:30 pm - 4:45 pm: F*** Terroir

Is terroir an immutable feature of a wine, or is it always in the eye of the beholder?  Who decides what is a true expression of terroir and whether it should be lauded?  Does terroir still matter if you let human influence into it?  In this live edition of the Disgorgeous Podcast – Miguel de Leon, Kevin Diamond, and John “Duck” McCarroll – will dive into these controversial questions with special guest Jamal Rayyis and more.

(Side note, listing a correction of “The seminar ‘2021 A Sustainability Odyssey’ will now be, ‘Fuck Terroir,’ our apologies for the confusion” reads like an Onion version of a newspaper correction).

5:00 pm: Email, Networking, or Beer Break

Feel free to refresh yourself or catch up on the outside world prior to dinner. Or meet us at Lake Drum Brewing for a well-earned Riesling diversion.

6:00 pm - 11:00 pm: The Riesling Crawl

In the exploratory spirit of FLXcursion, restaurant throughout downtown Geneva will be open this evening featuring special sets of wines and complimentary small bites to pair. With each location sponsored and themed by a wine region around the world, feel free to wander at your own pace between them all and explore Riesling around the world.

MORNING SEMINARS: EMBRACING THE NEW - RIESLING AND THE FUTURE

9:00 am -10:15 am: Terroir in the Age of the Internet

What does the future of understanding wine look like? Is face to face sales work in the industry or with consumers taking a back seat? What opportunities are opened up when the barriers to wine education and service are lowered by social media and other online tools, and which barriers still remain? Join moderator Maiah Johnson Dunn and a panel of Wine and Internet Innovators – Leslie Frelow of Swirl Suite, Bill Jensen of Tail Up Goat, Amanda Joffee of Shitty Wine Memes, and Allison Slute of Cab Franc Chronicles – as they delve into these questions and more.

10:30 am - 11:45 am: Always A Bridesmaid, Never The Bride

Riesling is a grape beloved by those in all sides of the industry, from production to sommeliers to wine shops and critics; but why is that?  And why hasn’t that love translated into similar adoration from consumers… or has it? Join Thomas Pastuszak and a panel of experts from all sides of the wine world to explore this conundrum.  Featuring Antonio Perez Palacios Arias (Once Finger Lakes), Patrick Comiskey (Wine and Spirits), Etinosa Emokpae, and a special guest appearance by Jancis Robinson MW.

12:00 pm: Riesling Mixtape and Lunch at The Cracker Factory

Cool wines?  Cool people?  Time for a cool, taco Tuesday lunch from the legendary Rafael of Rio Tomatlan.  And as much as we like to talk about wine and food pairings, with this lunch we’ll be adding a whole new dimension to how we understand wine.  Or at least a new sense: four 30-minute DJ sets will each feature Rieslings from a particular region paired with the tunes or playlist they create. Sponsored by Chateau Ste. Michelle, Opici Family Distributing, T. Edward Wines, and Wines of Michigan presented by Niagara Label.

2:00 pm - 4:00 pm: Keynote Address
